The impact the Battle of Stalingrad had on the course of the Second World War was immense. Both Russian and German forces suffered massive casualties during the 7 month long battle. In the end, the hard fought Russian victory stopped the German incursion into Russia and resulted in a successful nationwide counter-attack that drove the remaining Germans out of Russia. The casualties the German forces faced in Russia were catastrophic and greatly weakened their fighting capabilities. With German morale, troops and supplies dipping, the remaining Wermacht forces were susceptible to attack. Thus, the Russians were able to lead the invasion into Germany where they eventually reached the capital of Berlin and successfully ended the war.
